There is medical training involved in determining the correct dosage and identifying the type of seizure for which the medicine will work.

Anyone might be able to be trained. However, this is no reason to abolish nurses and force teachers, who lack the training, experience and desire, to administer medicine. Nurses are trained, experienced and comfortable giving medicine. Teachers are not. There is a level of fear and disgust that many people have when confronted with syringes. I certainly wouldn't want my child's life in the hands of someone who might panic or fail.

There is also the matter of dignity and legal liability. It is one thing for a parent to pull down her child's pant and stick something up his butt at home, (or a nurse, in the privacy of her office). It is quite another thing for a teacher to have to do this in front of 30-40 other children AND still maintain order, discipline and safety of those other children.

The real disservice is being done by our government, which wants to defund schools and place children's medical safety in the hands of untrained nonmedical staff.Anonimohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11040156020859417287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3988323189898113183.post-26603232191294216622011-06-17T21:35:15.492-07:002011-06-17T21:35:15.492-07:00Diastat is not an "injection". It is a ...Diastat is not an "injection". It is a gel administered per rectum via a plastic syringe. There are no needles involved and no medical training is required. Anybody can be trained to administer it including the parents or caregivers of a person with epilepsy. You're doing a grave disservice by pushing this misinformation.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
