We are making progress. Personally, I just think trying to fix the problems in the long run does nothing for those experiencing the problems now, and to quote Keynes, "In the long run we are all dead".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3988323189898113183.post-74293214155498041432011-11-22T21:59:25.597-08:002011-11-22T21:59:25.597-08:00Kids certainly deserve an option other than stayin...Kids certainly deserve an option other than staying in an abusive home or an abusive school. However, the bigger picture is that we need to do a better job reducing the amount of abuse that occurs in the first place.Anonimohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11040156020859417287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3988323189898113183.post-41597450831413230402011-11-17T22:12:54.346-08:002011-11-17T22:12:54.346-08:00I have never said students shouldn't have opti...I have never said students shouldn't have options. However, ff half of all students are sexually harassed in public schools, then it is clearly a social problem that must be dealt with socially. Running away and hiding in a virtual classroom doesn't solve the problem. Non-"neighborhood" schools also have bullying. Schools need to do a much better job dealing with this problem. And what about all the other things that are hurting the child, like NCLB and other "reforms," abusive parents, and an socioeconomic system that causes over 25% of U.S. children to go hungry on a regular basis?Anonimohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11040156020859417287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3988323189898113183.post-27268886673796062962011-11-17T10:27:41.594-08:002011-11-17T10:27:41.594-08:00"Those who dismiss bullying as a rare or insi..."Those who dismiss bullying as a rare or insignificant event will hopefully be enlightened by this recent data on sexual harassment. When we consider that nearly half of all students experience sexual harassment, the conclusion ought to be that bullying is the norm, not the exception. While many of the abusers felt that what they were doing was “no big thing,” or “just a joke,” nearly 30% of the victims said they had trouble sleeping, frequently felt sick or did not want to go to school."<br /><br />Yet you agree with forcing children to go to their neighborhood school, or rather you agree with giving them no option to get out of said school. That is what I still cannot understand :-/. If school is hurting a child, how can you take away any options for them to get out of it?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
