Indiana has 62 free, public charter schools, enrolling nearly 23,000 students. Nearly 40 of these schools are authorized by Ball State University. 23% of them are currently on probation by the university, 10% have either withdrawn their charter or had it revoked by the university, and 9 are on probation for failing to make adequate yearly progress under NCLB.
I wonder what Michelle Rhee and Bill Gates would have to say about this! Aren't charter schools the answer to all of society's ills??

Lynn Black, head of schools for Hoosier Academies, which has a BSU-chartered school in Muncie, Indiana, has an even better spin on the obvious charter school failures. He suggests that public charter schools fail due to the fact they are held to much higher standards than traditional public schools.
