Julie Washington, the current vice President for the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), is considered the favorite among the eight candidates contending for the presidency of the union. However, Washington is supported by outgoing President A.J. Duffy and many UTLA members are fed up with Duffy and his cronies, saying that the union has become too lazy, compliant and compromising under his leadership.
They are calling for much more militancy and labor consciousness. Matthew Ross said, “No more giving anything away. . . We’re going to take every inch back. . . I’m going to fight like a tiger.” Substitute teacher Linda ‘Everhart said, “The word is strike. Yes, strike. Have you been waiting to hear that powerful word?”
