March 15, 1887: Formation of the Painters International Union, which has grown into the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. The union now represents over 140,000 Painters, Drywall Finishers, Glaziers, Floor Coverers, and Sign and Display workers. www.iupat.org

March 15, 1917: The Supreme Court approved the Eight-Hour Act under the threat of a national railway strike.
