Teachers in the Kalimpong region of West Bengal, India say they have been losing 100 teachers per year to retirement, yet there have been no new teaching appointments made since 1997. They are demanding that the vacancies at their 770 primary schools be filled and have started a hunger strike to be followed by an all out strike if their demands are not met, according to the Teacher Solidarity website. Bhushan Thapa, the secretary of the Ghorka Primary Teachers Organization (GPTO), told the Kalimpong News, there would be a general strike if 4,000 new teachers are not hired.
