Algerian Teachers Attacked by Police

Algerian teachers demonstrated this weekend for raises, but were beaten back by truncheon-wielding cops, according to the Teacher Solidarity website. Police also attacked a demonstration by the National Coordination for Democracy and Change that was taking place at the same time. Teachers and students, who have been at the forefront of the movement against the Algerian government, have been fighting against privatization and neo-liberal policies that have been decimating their living standards. Their protests are routinely met with violent repression.
