The Senate education Committee said today that they plan to have a reauthorization bill for No Child Left Behind (NCLB) ready by late summer. They plan to rename the legislation “Every Child Counts.”
Senators Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee; Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo; and Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn, ranking member of the subcommittee overseeing K-12 policy—all said that if there isn’t a change soon, the law will deem too many schools as failures, even if they are performing well. They also said they want changes to Adequate Yearly Progress. There were no specifics about what this might look like. However, Harkin did say that there was bipartisan support for improvements in teacher evaluation systems, leaving open the possibility that Value-Added might become a federal mandate.
